Dear Barnard Community,

As we enter the second half of the spring semester, we’d like to share updates on construction work related to the Francine LeFrak Center for Well-Being.

Inside - Barnard Hall and Tunnels

  • Lower level tunnel: Piping demolition, welding and cabling work will result in increased activities noticeable in the lower level corridors and tunnel to Milstein. Mitigation strategies will be in place to minimize the impacts, but please note that noise and odors may be noticeable periodically during this time and there may be additional upcoming tunnel closures.
  • North areaway: Increased material and manpower will be present for the replacement of roofing in the north areaway adjacent to the Annex entrance on the north side of Barnard Hall. Access to the Annex will be maintained at all times.
  • Infrastructure switchovers: Coordinated interruptions to electrical services will take place overnight and weekend hours to transition from existing to new lines. We will contact those directly impacted should equipment need to be powered down during these times. In addition, second floor offices may experience some reduced efficiency in temperature controls for a period of 1-2 weeks while hydronic systems are switched over.

Outside - Claremont Avenue

In addition to these interior impacts, we also have an update on exterior construction work that is starting today Monday, March 18. We are installing new underground water lines as part of the renovation. The work starts today and  lasts about three weeks. It involves digging up a portion of Claremont Avenue to a depth of 5-feet and installing new piping into the building. This work will generate noise with large masonry saws and jackhammers, and we apologize in advance for the disruption. The anticipated end date for this work is now April 8.

Per our permits, one lane of traffic will be open at all times during the work. The single lane of traffic will not stretch far along Claremont and will be similar to the length of the current construction lane. The roads and sidewalks will be fully opened at the end of each working shift, and there will be metal plates and/or pedestrian ramps installed as needed to maintain access. We will stage the site each weekday at 8 a.m. and active work will start at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.
