Residential Life & Housing > Moving Out

Move Out Extensions

  • MOVING OUT (up level ▲)
  • Move Out Extensions

Extensions for Spring 2020 will not be available because the residence halls will be closed for Summer 2020.

  • Students with Approved Extensions
    • Approval Email
    • Moving to Temporary Housing
    • Checking-Out at End of Extension
  • Requests for Individual Extensions

Students with Approved Extensions

Students involved with Graduation (ex. Junior Marshals), Give-N-Go-Green volunteers, Varsity athletes, etc. may receive approvals for housing extensions after check-out deadline.

Note: Visiting & graduating students are not eligible for extensions.

Requests for program extensions must be submitted to housing@barnard.edu by 4pm on Tuesday, April 28, 2020, directly from the Faculty/Coach/Staff member organizing your program. The request list must include:

  • Full name for each student
  • UNI for each student
  • Date/time the extension is being requested through
  • Reason for the extension request (ex. what role is the student involved in that requires an extension)

Extensions for individual reasons are typically not available. Individual requests must also be submitted before 4pm on Tuesday, April 28, 2020.

Students in summer housing who wish to stay until the start of Summer Session 1 must apply for May Interim Housing. Students working for Alumnae Reunion Weekend must apply for Reunion Worker Housing.

Students will only be approved for extensions if they are in "good standing" (academic, disciplinary, payment) with the College. Any students involved with conduct violations during the exam or extension period may face immediate removal from the residence halls.

Most students approved for extensions will be required to relocate to temporary housing in Reid Hall in order to receive a housing extension.

Approval Email

Students approved for extensions will be sent a confirmation email with their check-out deadline & individual instructions for moving to temporary housing (or staying in place). These emails should be sent by 10pm on Friday, May 8, 2020.

Students who do not receive a confirmation email are not approved for extensions.

Moving to Temporary Housing

Most students will be required to move to a randomly-assigned temporary room in Reid Hall (shared double rooms without AC) in order to have housing for their extension. This enables the Barnard Facilities office to clean the other residence halls for summer use.

Students' approval emails will provide a confirmation of their individual expectation for moving to temporary housing in Reid (or if they would be able to stay in their current room for their extension). However, the table below provides a general guide:

(NOTE: This table is subject to change as it gets closer to the end of the semester)

Spring Room Assignment If extension lasts beyond the date/time below, student must move out of Spring room to Reid Hall by this deadline When student would be able to sign for Reid room key at the Res Life office (110 Sulzberger) *
Sulzberger (floors 2-8) 5pm on Friday, May 15, 2020 11am-3pm on Friday, May 15, 2020
All residence halls besides Sulzberger & Reid 9pm on Friday, May 15, 2020 4pm-5:45pm on Friday, May 15, 2020
Reid *  * Students MAY be able to stay in their Spring room assignment, but need to be prepared to relocate / consolidate if & when necessary TBA

* Students living in Reid for the Spring semester whose roommates do not have extensions will need to be prepared to receive a new randomly-assigned roommate for the extension period.

* Note: the dates & deadlines for students to move to extension housing in Reid Hall are subject to change if necessary. The College will email students with as much advance notice as possible if it is necessary for them to move at a different time. This means that students should not be using extension housing as a location to store their belongings in order to leave campus or NYC. Students who do not move when required may be subject to significant fines and disciplinary action (which could include the loss of extension, summer, and/or academic year housing).

Students who must relocate to Reid Hall will sign for their temporary room keys during the date/times above. Students must present their Student ID when signing for their key. Only the student may sign for their key (not friends or family). Requests for specific roommates are not available and students will not be provided with a specific room assignment prior to signing for their keys at the Res Life office.

Students who must move to Reid Hall will need to finish moving out of their Spring room assignment by the deadline above and complete a check-out envelope at their residence hall Front Desk to turn in their Spring room keys. Students who do not return their keys or move out by the deadlines above will face fines & disciplinary action.

Note: students will be moving into Reid rooms that the academic year residents just moved out of. Timing does not permit these rooms to be cleaned before move-in for extensions and this housing can only be provided on an as-is basis.

Checking-Out at End of Extension

Students will need to finish moving out of housing & properly check-out by the date/time provided in their confirmation email. Additional extensions past the approved date/time are not available.

After moving out their belongings & locking the door of their extension room, students must complete a Check-Out Envelope (available at their residence hall front desk), enclosing their keys & building sticker.

Students who do not return their keys and/or complete a check-out envelope will be charged for an improper check-out ($100). Missing keys will result in an additional $100 per key charge.

Failure to move out before the extension deadline will result in fines & disciplinary action (which could include the loss of summer and/or academic year housing).

Requests for Individual Extensions

Students are provided the end-of-year check-out deadlines in advance and are asked to plan accordingly. Students are strongly discouraged from making travel plans for later than their check-out deadline, as extensions are typically not available.

Note: Visiting & graduating students are not eligible for extensions.

Extensions will be approved for individual students only in the most extenuating of circumstances and would result in a $100 per day charge. Students should not assume that their request will be approved (as the majority of individual requests are not able to be approved).

Approved students will need to be prepared to relocate with all of their belongings to a randomly assigned shared double room in Reid Hall in order to receive an extension (see above for more information). Approved extensions are to provide housing for students -- not to provide storage for belongings so that students can leave campus or NYC.

To request an extension, please email housing@barnard.edu the following information no later than 4pm on Tuesday, April 28, 2020:

  1. Your name, Student ID, and class year
  2. Your current building & room
  3. Your cellphone number and Barnard email address
  4. Where do you live? (city, state, country, etc.)
  5. Date/time of your last scheduled exam
  6. Date/time through which you are requesting an extension
  7. Reason for your request
  8. Attach supporting documentation

Extensions will typically not be considered for more than one day past the 5pm Friday, May 15, 2020, check-out deadline.

Extensions for graduating seniors are NOT available past the 10am Thursday, May 21, 2020, senior check-out deadline and will not be considered.

Upon reviewing your extension request, Residential Life & Housing will contact you via email to let you know if your request was approved or denied.
