Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming a Space, is an in-depth biography of the influential author and Barnard alum,  acclaimed 20th century “novelist, folklorist, anthropologist” and “Genius of the South.” This new documentary highlights Hurston’s groundbreaking anthropological work that challenged assumptions about race, gender and cultural superiority. This event anticipates the celebration of Zora Neale Hurston’s matriculation in 1925 and graduation from Barnard in 1928,  and the celebration of 100 years of Black women at Barnard.  In honor of this distinguished alumna, and the many Black students who  came after her, the Zora Neale Hurston ’28 Centennial Committee committee, composed of faculty, staff, students and alums, will prepare a plan to organize and celebrate Hurston’s  legacy as well as interrogate the history of Black students belonging at the College.  The watch party will include a screening of Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming a Space, followed by a Q&A and debriefing with Professor Monica Miller.  In conjunction with this new film, PBS Books hosted a conversation between Prof. Miller and Hurston scholar Prof. Genevieve West about newly discovered Hurston work and Hurston’s  life and legacy.  You can watch it here.
