In February 2021, Tow Associate Professor of Ancient Studies Ellen Morris published a paper titled "Machiavellian Masculinities: Historicizing and Contextualizing the 'Civilizing Process' in Ancient Egypt" in the interdisciplinary Journal of Egyptian History. Morris, whose research interests include social history, political fragmentation, and imperialism in ancient Egypt, offers an expansive, comparative analysis of presentations of masculinity among ancient Egyptian men. Morris provides a multifocal approach to understanding how men in positions of authority utilized masculine performance in order to maintain their power.
