Dear Members of the Barnard Community,
Welcome to the fall semester! I’m writing today to provide an update on campus access for this semester.
Barnard uses an Access Level system with four levels to ensure that Barnard remains a welcoming and safe place for our community to live and learn.
This semester, we anticipate Barnard will remain on level B, with the following details on access points:
-
The main gate on West 117th Street and Broadway will remain the primary point of entry and exit, 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. • The gate on West 119th Street and Broadway will be available as a point of entry or exit for BC and CUID holders Monday - Friday 8AM - 6PM. Guests should use the main gate on West 117th Street and Broadway for entry.• NEW! The doors to Milstein at 40 Claremont and to Milbank Hall on West 120th Street and Broadway will be accessible only to BC and CUID holders Monday - Friday 8AM - 8PM. Guests should use the main gate on West 117th Street and Broadway for entry.• Available exits for daily use are located at West 117th and Broadway, West 119th Street and Broadway, 40 Claremont, and West 120th Street and Broadway. • In the event of an emergency or drill, all emergency exits are available for use.
The West 119th and Broadway door entrance to Milbank Hall will be accessible to people with disabilities Monday - Friday, between the hours of 8AM - 11PM, to match the building hours of Milbank Hall. To accelerate entry to accessible entrances, students with disabilities should contact the Center for Accessibility Resources & Disability Services (CARDS) or call 212-854-4634 and employees should contact Human Resources.
Guests are welcome to visit campus! Please register your guests through Workday with a minimum of 24-48 hours notice. Guests should use the main gate on West 117th Street and Broadway and proceed to the new Welcome Center for entry. Anyone without appropriate approved credentials through the ID system or guest system will be denied access to campus. A new software system is expected to roll out in the next few months to make the guest registration process easier and more secure. We will also be building out the Welcome Center as a campus resource for visitors navigating campus. More to come on these exciting initiatives for our guests very soon.
Students in the on-campus quad (Sulzberger, Reid, Hewitt, and Brooks Halls) who would like to bring guests to their rooms should follow the same guest access request system as those who wish to enter the main campus. Because there is increased security across the campus and in the campus quad, these buildings will no longer have staff at building entrances. In the next few months, the entrances to Brooks and Sulzberger will have access card technology and turnstiles installed. Anyone who is locked out of their dorm and needs access should contact the CARES non-emergency number: 212-854-3362 and select option 6.
Students who are religiously observant will be assisted by our CARES team at the main gate for entry onto campus as needed.
We ask you to always keep your ID on you at all times for entry and exit to our buildings. Your ID card must be active at the time of entry to gain access to our buildings. For example, the cards belonging to members of the BC or CU community who have not visited the Barnard campus in the past 180 days must be reactivated to provide access. If you are a member of the BC/CU community and you believe you do not have the proper swipe access, or require specialized swipe access into campus spaces, please fill out the Campus Access Request Form for review. We recommend that you do so before arriving at our access points.
As always, to protect yourself and our community, we ask that you do not hold the door open for people you don’t know wanting to enter the campus and ask them to use the main entry points. Similarly, it is always a good practice to ask everyone to swipe their own ID card at each of our campus buildings.
Our access levels and access points may change as the needs arise throughout the semester. Please visit our website for up-to-date campus access information. We will also maintain a section regarding campus access in 411 (for students) and Connections (for faculty and staff).
Wishing you a wonderful academic year!
