Appointment Types

Our care encompasses a wide range of general services, with a particular emphasis on the developmental needs of college-aged women.

You may be seen at the Primary Care Health Service by appointment or as a "walk-in." Our walk-in system is for urgent care needs only.

Please note that there is a $25 no show fee for all missed appointments that are not canceled ahead of time.

Appointment FAQs


Walk-In/Urgent Care:

  • Length: Approximately 20-30 minutes
  • Availability: Monday – Wednesday 9 AM – 11:30 AM, Thursday 9 AM – 11 AM, Friday 9AM  - 11:30 AM
  • Scheduling: Cannot be made in advance. Patients are seen in order of urgency and then time of arrival. The earlier you arrive the more likely it is you will be seen.
  • Walk-In/Urgent Care visits are for urgent medical and GYN issues that cannot wait until a scheduled appointment is available. Some examples of common urgent care issues are: sore throat, sinus infection, allergy symptoms, urgent sexually transmitted infection concerns, urinary tract infection, yeast infection, sprained ankle, back pain, cold/virus symptoms, and cough.

Same Day Appointment:

  • Length: 30 minutes
  • Availability: Monday – Friday afternoons.
  • Scheduling: Can only be made via phone or in person and must be scheduled the same day.
  • Same Day Appointments are for urgent medical and gynecological (GYN) issues.

Contraceptive Management:

  • Length: 20 minutes
  • Availability: Select weekday mornings.
  • Scheduling: Can schedule on the Open Communicator website, via phone or in person.
  • Contraceptive management appointments are for current or restarted contraceptive prescriptions or for pre-IUD medical clearance.

Gynecological Appointment:

  • Length: 40 minutes
  • Availability: Monday – Thursday afternoons.
  • GYN visits are for routine annual exams, routine STI screening, or on-going menstrual, vaginal or urinary problems.
  • If you have an urgent GYN issue, please come in during our Walk-In/Urgent Care Hours or call the PCHS at 1-212-854-2091 for our Same Day Appointment availability.

Medical Visit:

  • Length: 30 minutes
  • Availability: Monday – Thursday afternoons.
  • Scheduling: Can schedule on the Open Communicator website, via phone or in person.
  • Medical visits are for on-going/chronic medical issues, referral requests, and follow ups.
  • If you have an urgent medical issue, please come in during our Walk-In/Urgent Care Hours or call the PCHS at 1-212-854-2091 for our Same Day Appointment availability.

Physical Exam and/or Form Completion:

  • Length: 40 minutes
  • Availability: Monday – Thursday afternoons.
  • Scheduling: Can schedule on the Open Communicator website, via phone or in person.
  • Physical Exam and/or Form Completion visits are for annual physical exams, forms for study abroad, internships, or medical clearances.
  • This is NOT a Travel/Immunization appointment. If you need any immunizations please call 1-212-854-2091 for information about scheduling a Travel or Immunization Appointment. We recommend that you schedule your Physical Exam/Form Completion appointment for after your Travel/Immunization appointment.
  • We suggest that you bring a copy of your most recent vaccination record with you to your Physical Exam and/or Form Completion appointment.
  • Please note that this type of appointment is necessary for any form completion regardless of length of form.

Immunization Appointment:

  • Length: 10 - 40 minutes depending on how many immunizations are given
  • Availability: Monday – Friday mornings.
  • Scheduling: Can schedule via phone or in person.
  • The PCHS offers a number of vaccines to Barnard students, available by appointment. Please see our Vaccines Page for more information.

PPD Placement/Reading:

  • Length: 10 minutes
  • Availability: Monday – Friday mornings and afternoons. PPD placements are not performed on Thursdays.
  • Scheduling: Can schedule via phone or in person.
  • PPD Placement or Reading appointments are for tuberculosis screening.

Nursing Appointment:

  • Length: 20 minutes
  • Availability: Monday – Friday mornings and afternoons.
  • Scheduling: Can schedule via phone or in person.
  • Nursing appointments are for nursing follow ups, EKGs, wound check follow ups, and for nursing procedures such as ear irrigation and medication administration.

Travel Appointment:

  • Length: 20 – 60 minutes depending on your travel itinerary.
  • Availability: Monday – Friday afternoons.
  • Scheduling: Can schedule via phone or in person once paperwork is reviewed and approved.
  • Travel appointments are for travel counseling and travel related immunizations. Please see our Travel Medicine page for more information.

Allergy Shot/Immunotherapy Appointment:

  • Length: 20 - 40 minutes depending on your immunotherapy protocol
  • Availability: Monday – Friday mornings.
  • Scheduling: Can schedule via phone or in person.
  • All allergy appointments are made once all paperwork and protocols have been reviewed and approved by the PCHS staff.

Nutrition Appointment:

  • Length: 30 – 60 minutes
  • Availability: Hours vary by week.
  • Scheduling: Can schedule via phone or in person.
  • There will be paperwork which you will need to complete and submit prior to your initial visit with the nutritionist.

How do I schedule an appointment?

What type of appointments can I schedule online on the Open Communicator website?

You can schedule the following appointment types on the Open Communicator website:

  • Contraceptive Management
  • Gynecological
  • Physical or Form Completion
  • Medical Visit

 

What type of appointments cannot be scheduled on the Open Communicator website?

You cannot schedule the following appointment types online. Please call or come into the office to schedule the following appointment types:

  • Flu shot
  • Immunization
  • PPD placement or reading (for tuberculosis screening)
  • Travel appointment
  • Nutrition appointment
  • EKG
  • Lab work (from PCHS or Furman Counseling providers only!)
  • Allergy shot appointment
  • Health Education appointment
  • Any Furman appointment

 

How do I cancel an appointment?

There are three ways to cancel an appointment:

You can cancel any scheduled PCHS appointment via the Open Communicator website in the Appointments Section, regardless of whether you made it online, over the phone or in person!

Appointments cannot be canceled via voice mail, gBear/personal email or Open Communicator Secure Messaging.

 

Does the PCHS charge a fee if I miss my appointment?

Yes! The PCHS charges a $25 no show appointment fee for all appointments which have not been canceled before the start of your appointment.

 

What should I bring to my appointment?

All students must bring their insurance card (either the physical card or a print out of the front and back of the card) every time they visit the PCHS.

There is no co-pay or visit fee at the PCHS. However, the PCHS does charge for medication, vaccines and medical supplies which must be paid for at the time of the visit via Visa, Mastercard or check. The PCHS does not accept Discover, American Express or cash.

 

What if I’m not sure if I need to make an appointment or can walk-in?

If you are unsure as to whether you need an appointment or can walk-in, please feel free to contact us at 1-212-854-2091. Except in emergencies, students who arrive without an appointment should be prepared to wait.
