Privacy Policy
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (the Buckley Amendment, or FERPA) places certain restrictions on the type of information that we may release to the “public,” including members of a student's family. We will only release address information that is available on Barnard’s public Directory. If no information appears in the Directory, we cannot even verify whether that person is a student at Barnard.
In addition, we often get telephone and email requests from family members asking if a package has been received at Barnard and/or picked up by a student. They will even provide a tracking number from FedEx, UPS, or the U.S. Postal Service. For the student's protection, we cannot respond to such requests from relatives, friends, vendors, or anyone other than the student recipient herself.
We tell parents and other callers the following: "Our Privacy Policy allows us only to communicate directly with students about packages sent to them. If you have a concern about the delivery of a package, please have the recipient contact us in person or by email from a Barnard email address." Students can help by following up on mail and package problems directly with the Mail Services staff. Feel free to contact a supervisor at any time.
