Student Consumer Information

Find below the information you need to make informed decisions about your postsecondary education.

The Higher Education Opportunity Act (Public Law 110-315) (HEOA) was enacted on August 14, 2008, and reauthorizes the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (HEA).  At the direction of the U.S. Department of Education, institutions that receive federal student financial assistance are required to disclose certain information to consumers, such as students, employees, and parents.

General Barnard Information

Accreditation and state approval

Barnard is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), 3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104. www.msche.org, 267-284-5000. MSCHE is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The most recent complete review was during the 2021-22 academic year. Current and prospective students may receive a copy of Barnard College's accreditation upon request. Please contact Institutional Effectiveness.

Barnard's programs are registered with the New York State Education Department.

Admissions
Prospective students, including transfers, visiting and international, can find information about admission on the admissions website.

Academic programs
Browse the list of Barnard's departments and programs. Barnard's course catalogue provides information about program requirements and course offerings.

Instructional facilities
Buildings can be located online using the online campus map. You can learn more about the rooms available on campus on the website of the Events Management Office or by contacting the Registrar's Office. Information about specific instructional or laboratory facilities can be found on the website of the departments and programs.

Facilities and services available to students with disabilities
The Center for Accessibility Resources & Disability Services provides information about accommodations, facilities, and other services.

Textbooks
Textbook information is available on Columbia's course planning site, Vergil.

Student diversity
Information about Barnard's student diversity can be found on the website of the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.

Withdrawals
The Dean of Studies office provides the requirements and procedures for withdrawing from Barnard. Students considering withdrawing should contact the office.

Transfer of credit policies and articulation agreements
Barnard's catalogue provides information about the transfer policy. The Registrar's Office provides information about the procedures to request a transfer of credit.

Barnard students have the option of applying to 4+1 programs which allow students to enroll simultaneously in Barnard and a Columbia master’s degree program. These programs allow Barnard students to combine their BA with a master’s in Engineering, Public Health, Public Affairs, International Affairs, Quantitative Social Science, or Russian, Eurasian, and Eastern European Studies. 

Barnard students have the option of applying to a five-year BA/MA program in the social sciences with Sciences Po. Students can apply to this program during their sophomore year. 

When applying to Barnard, applicants can choose to apply to the dual-degree program between Barnard and the Jewish Theological Seminary. Through this program, students receive a bachelor’s degree from Barnard and a second bachelor's degree in Jewish Studies from List College.

Students have the opportunity to apply to receive private music instruction from faculty at the Manhattan School of Music or Julliard.

Costs and Financial Aid

Cost to attend

Information about tuition and fees can be found on the website of the Bursar's Office. The Office of Financial Aid lists the budget or expense information used for awarding financial aid. The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment lists tuition and fees for previous academic years.

Net Price Calculator

Prospective students and their families can use the College Board's net price calculator to estimate their contribution and need-based award as full-time students.

Types of financial aid

Barnard offers need-based financial aid and meets full demonstrated need. You can find information about the types of aid available (grants, scholarships and loans) and the requirements in the Types of Aid section of the financial aid website.

Applying for aid

Students can find information about applying for need-based financial aid on the Apply for Aid section of the financial aid website.

Students and their families can find information about the types of federal and private programs and instructions about how to apply.

Cohort default rates

You can find cohort default rates on the website of the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) of the U.S. Department of Education and searching "Barnard College" or using the OPE ID 002708.

Enrollment and percentage receiving Title IV aid

The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment posts the number of enrolled students and the percentage receiving Title IV Aid.

Health, Safety and Campus Life

Student activities

Student organizations sponsor lectures, concerts, recitals, plays, films, and other events. Learn more about life at Barnard.

Campus security policies, crime statistics and crime log

The Community Safety office provides information about services, crime prevention, and emergency preparedness. The office publishes the Annual Security and Fire Safety report.  The report includes missing student policy and procedures, emergency response and evacuation procedures, and crime and fire statistics.

The Denise LeFrak Foundation Alcohol and Substance Awareness Program serves Barnard's community by providing drug and alcohol education, prevention, and intervention efforts on campus.
